Case 1: Our first client is a retiree who fell behind on his taxes for the past 10 years, but decided it was finally time to get help after his wife was diagnosed with cancer. Our client came to Polston Tax after he tried to take care of the problem himself and the IRS would only offer him a payment plan he couldn’t afford. After getting to work on his case, our office received an intent to levy letter from the IRS. We quickly appealed the notice to protect our client from any type of money seizure from the IRS. Once we were able to analyze his financials, we held a Collection Due Process hearing with the IRS. After negotiating with the IRS agent, we decided Currently Not Collectible would be our clients best resolution for his financial situation. We were able to secure CNC status for our client, saving him over $68,000.
Case 2: Our next client came to us after having their tax return prepared by a CPA who said they would owe for the upcoming year. The couple wanted to get a second opinion and to resolve the tax issue as soon as possible. While our tax team worked on their federal tax return, our case managers started getting the clients financials together so as soon as the income tax return was filed, we could get them a resolution. Because our clients was closing a business they owned and also filing bankruptcy, we knew we could get them into a good resolution. After going through what would be best for our client and their new business, we asked the Revenue Officer for a Partial Payment Installment Agreement that would allow our client to make affordable monthly payments. The RO agreed with our assessment and approved the payment plan which saved our client over $70,000 in the process!
Case 3: Most of our clients are assigned Revenue Officers because they have a large tax liability and haven’t made attempts to settle their tax balances. One of our clients owed almost half a million dollars to the IRS and was desperate to get her tax liability resolved. She owed for several tax years and owed the state thousands of dollars as well. After getting our clients tax returns filed and getting her into compliance with the IRS, we started working towards a resolution. We decided an Offer in Compromise (O.I.C) would be the most ideal outcome for her situation. Our firm submitted the OIC and waited nearly a year before the IRS finally responded and assigned an Offer specialist! We aggressively negotiated the OIC payment arrangement with the Offer Specialist hoping to get something our client could afford. The IRS finally accepted the OIC months later and we were able to settle our client’s tax liability once and for all saving her almost $450,000 in the end!
